At ages 7 and 8 entrance children begin at Preparatory (Prep) School. An entrance exam and interview are often set by the school. Girls tend to leave their Prep school to join senior school aged 11. However, it is not unusual for girls to advance to senior school aged 13. Boys leave Prep school for senior school aged 13.
Senior schools – many of whom expect a child to be registered with them from two years of age - will often want to interview and pre-assess prospective pupils at nine years old. Successful applications will obviously also depend on the results of entrance exams. The national standard entrance exam for 13 year olds is Common Entrance (CE) which embraces all academic areas of the school curriculum.
Aged 16, all school pupils are required to sit GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education) and at 18, the national standard exams are the ‘A’ (Advanced) Levels. However, increasingly more institutions expect their pupils to sit The International Baccalaureate.
