Our Tutors

Our tutors are trained using methods we have developed over seventeen years. Charles Bonas is on hand to provide continuous support during assignments, advising on materials, techniques and assessing progress.

During their assignments, tutors have to email back to us on a weekly basis reports that set out the attainment levels they are achieving with their students, together with any problems that they may be encountering. One of our consultants is always on hand to provide ongoing support to the tutors, and we often drop in on tutorials to monitor progress. In this sense, our tutors are part of a team rather than an agency - we like to think that Bonas MacFarlane is unique in this level of care and training.

We have tutors who are trained teachers, and when we provide full time tutors, who will be homseschooling children, we like to hire professional teachers.

We also have many tutors who have experience of working in schools, but are professional tutors rather than teachers. Our tutor training is the most comprehensive in London and has much in common with teacher training, but focuses on the particular skills that are more relevant to tutoring than teaching.

Typically, our tutors are young, have had a first class education (most are Oxford or Cambridge graduates) and will be engaged in free lance activity (such as writing or consulting) or postgraduate study (medicine, or PHDs). Because Bonas MacFarlane is one of the most established of the leading Central London tutorial agencies, we have more tutors who have been with us for many years and have helped hundreds of families.

We are fortunate in London to have young tutors who are world class achievers - whether it be in scientific research, opera singing, script writing, or charity work. These students inspire with tales of their careers which their tutees are often inspiring towards, because we try to match the interest of tutors with those of their tutees. So, if an A Level student is aspiring to become a barrister, we will provide a Bar School student, or a medical student if the goal is to become a doctor.

At the heart of the Bonas MacFarlane approach is an understanding that tutoring is intensely personal and relies on providing the right tutor for the right child. For this reason we do not insist that parents commit to any number of lessons, and treat the first tutorial as a trial one. We can provide any number of candidates, until we have placed the right tutor.
